Types of Laboratory Research In Molecular Biology
There are many types of molecular biology laboratory research. The topic itself spans a broad range of areas. It can be broadly categorized into the fields of applied science, like biological and clinical sciences. It can also be further categorized into the more specific areas of study such as cell and tissue biology, metabolic and structural biology, and nutritional biochemistry. The study of molecular biology is complex and involves rigorous methods and exact protocols.
When it comes to molecular biology, the first three topics are perhaps the most common. One can find a variety of laboratory research in these areas. The methods and procedures used in these different types of studies differ greatly. However, all of these are integral parts of the field and serve to advance knowledge on living things. Let’s examine the four broad types of molecular biology laboratory research.

The first type of laboratory research focuses on molecules in cells. Its method is where scientists look at single cells, viruses, and other entities like proteins or enzymes to discover their function. This study focuses on how cells get their job done and why some cells survive better than others. For example, this type of study may explore how a virus causes leukemia in human cells, how the body uses enzymes to break down sugar, how energy production in bacteria or plants is regulated, or how the neutrophils, or white blood cells, play a role in fighting infections.
The second type of laboratory research looks at gene regulation. This is often confused with transcription. Transcription refers to how information is translated from DNA into RNA and regulatory occurs between DNA and RNA. When transcription is stopped, the genes stop functioning.
The third type of study looks at metabolic pathways. There are multiple ways in which these pathways regulate the production of cells. These include energy production in photoreceptor cells, signal transduction in neurons, and information transportation via ribosome. Another group of laboratory researchers’ studies the effect of environment on cellular metabolism. That is, they look at what happens to cells that grow in specific environments (toxic or otherwise) and then find out how those cells behave when they grow in a less toxic environment.

The fourth group studies the relationship between nutrition and health. This looks at how different nutrients affect different types of cells. For example, an experiment may test the effect of luteinizing hormone (LH) on sperm cells. This hormone is made by the LH glands and is related to fertility. But it can cause birth defects if introduced into the environment too late in life.
The fifth and last is the study of mutagenesis. Mutagenesis is the process by which cells reproduce. Sometimes this is caused by external factors and sometimes it’s a result of an internal flaw. Sometimes it happens accidentally by cells when they divide. When scientists study mutation, they are trying to find out whether there are any harmful effects on cells.

There are many other types of laboratory research of molecular biology that scientists do on a regular basis. If you work in a research lab, chances are that you will be involved in some of them. To learn more about these, talk to someone who works in such an area. Or do a little research on your own!
These five areas of laboratory research all have different ways of telling us information. But there is one thing that all of them have in common: they all involve living organisms, with all their various differences. This is part of what makes them interesting. Even though we study different types of cells and organisms, it’s all about living things. And since a lab involves living things, it includes cells.
As you can see, studying these types of cells is a life-long process. It doesn’t end when a project is done. In order to get the most out of your studies, be sure to do them regularly. Because of the regularity of these projects, the laboratory research you’ll be doing will give you ideas for new projects, help you move forward in your career, and probably make you a very good laboratory researcher.
So if you’re interested in different types of laboratory research of molecular biology, it’s worth it to take a class or two each semester. Studying will give you ideas for new projects and help you with your own studies. It may even inspire you to take on a graduate study of your own.
